Problem Analysis: In the Present modern scenario there are various modes of fast communication. Taking into consideration our College Department still doesn’t have a proper telecommunication network between various faculty rooms & the Labs. The concerned person has to either call for a peon or some assistant for calling someone from next lab or department for any desired purpose. As such much time is wasted in the procedure. Moreover, calling someone for petty reasons is a pesky job. This problem can   be very easily worked out by making efficient use of the college infrastructure.                                                                               Almost each & every faculty member of the college is facilitated with a p.c. in their respective cabins or lab. If a general Chat Server is built up & used, it may be easier for any person to call or consult any other faculty “without even leaving the desk” & thus saving time.   Ø Having one of the fastest ‘Intranet’ facilities in our campus, efficient usage of the infrastructure is not done. Ø Manual method of calling/consulting/informing a person by sending a peon or assistant by ringing a bell is a pesky job. Ø There is also a relative time loss in the manual system. Solution: A common online Chat Server can hereby worked out which will have following features:- §  Fast & efficient live chatting between any two computers connected by some network (LAN). §  This can be upgraded to a common chat room in which a server pc hosts the chat or a “Discussion”. §  It can serve as a messenger on the Intranet. §  Independent, fast & easy mode of communication. §  Efficient use of college infrastructure (LAN).           Requirements                                  Minimum Hardware Requirements:-      Pentium 2 & above comp., with at least 128 MB RAM.     Minimum Software Requirements:-     Windows 95, 98, 2000, ME, XP.   JDK 1.4.2-02 or higher version need to be installed in the system     Language used:-       Java (Applets, Server Socket Programming, UDP).     Future Implements:-   Can be made as a full fledged Chat Server based application that may be used throughout the College campus as an instant messenger. Some advanced features may also be added in the application like:   §  Text editor, §  Font size & color selector, §  Send File options, etc. §  Sound Alerts, §  Smileys & Audibles.                                                                   Feasibility Study on ‘Online Chat Application’               The main aim of the feasibility study of activity is to determine whether it should be financially and technically feasible to develop the product. It involves the analysis of problem and collection of all relevant information. It helps to check out various deficiencies arising due to the conventional method of conveying message from one person to another. It is the fastest & cheapest possible means to communicate making use of the college resources (fast Intranet facility) by its best.     Scope                 The ‘Online Chat Application’ can be used in any college, institution, or workplace having suitable Intranet facility & the users knowing slight knowledge of using Java built Applications.               Product Perspective   §  First of all we need to install the java development toolkit J2SDK1.4.2_02 or higher version in our system. §  The two class files of this class files need to be copied & pasted in the C:/J2SDK1.4.2_02/bin> folder.                                                        Product Functions     §  Open two Command prompt Windows. §  Change the directory to C:/J2SDK1.4.2_02/bin>. §  Compile the two programs using Java Compiler ‘javac’ <filename.java>. §  Execute the first program using the Appletviewer in one of the Command prompt window. §  Now execute the next program using the Appletviewer in another command prompt window. §  At any time to break the execution of program press “Ctrl+c”.                                                    Further Implementation       §  If we wish then we can implement it on the Intranet. §  We have to simply replace the “getLocalHost” code in the program with the computer’s name with which we wish to chat. §  Can be made as a full fledged Chat Server based application that may be used throughout the College campus as an instant messenger. §  Some advanced features may also be added in the application like:   Ø Text editor, Ø Font size & color selector, Ø Send File options, Ø Sound Alerts, Ø Smileys & Audibles.                        General Constraints                                                                                 This program is hardware and software dependent. ·        It is open to virus attacks and hackers. ·        No built in security features. ·        Implementation on a small scale. ·        Frequent changes are not accommodated. ·
