Music Player Daemon (MPD) is a flexible, powerful, server-side application for playing music. Through plugins and libraries, it can play a variety of sound files while being controlled by its network protocol. MPD simply runs in the background playing music from its playlist. Client programs communicate with MPD to manipulate playback, the playlist, and the database. It is not a full-featured music player program such as Amarok, but its clients can serve such role. MPD uses a flat file database to maintain the basic music file information when it is not running. Once the daemon has been started, the database is kept completely in-memory, and no hard disk access is necessary to look up or search for local audio files.
Software Requirements:- A Unix-like OS (Linux, BSD, macOS) or Windows with a POSIX-compatible environment. A compatible audio backend like ALSA, PulseAudio, PipeWire, or JACK for audio output. Required libraries for decoding formats (libmad for MP3, libflac for FLAC, libvorbis for Ogg, etc.). Hardware Requirements:- A CPU with sufficient processing power to handle real-time audio decoding and streaming. At least 512MB of RAM for smooth operation, with more required for large music libraries. Sufficient storage to accommodate both the MPD database and the user’s music collection.
